Ask Your Customers

I ran across an interesting blog article on Duct Tape Marketing today that ties in really well to enhance a point I was trying to make in my post ‘Why Blog” earlier this week.  The article is called ‘What Would You Google If?”  I encourage you to read it and give some thought to asking your customers this question that John Jantsch suggests:

“What would you Google if you were looking for this kind of service/product?”

Asking this one simple question will give you some very valuable insight into how people think when they go online to search for the product or service your organization offers.  What they tell you (the words they give you) now become your “key words”.  You will then want to make sure you incorporate phrases that use these key words into your organization’s web site and your blog.  This will increase the likelihood that future customers, who have similar needs as your current ones, will perform a similar word/phrase search in Google or their search engine of choice when they go online.  Using these keywords, and including your town/city and province will dramatically increase your ranking in the search. Search engines will look for similar strings of words online and draw your site to the top of the search results. It’s a major win for your business!

This is one element of what is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO. Many marketing companies try to make the SEO process sound really complex. It actually is not so mysterious when you have a little guidance like this. It takes a little focused thought and effort, but pays big dividends. The value of your company’s web site is increased dramatically when you are easily found.

Try this little experiment and implement the results. You will be pleasantly surprised how it increases your chances of being found, and will likely increase business!

  1. Agreed, good SEO is often just common sense and a little time to take effect.
